Meditation is the practice and process of calming the mind. Meditation helps the mind focus, reduces metabolic rates, and helps the body relax. The primary benefits of meditation come from expanding the conscious capacity of the mind and removing deeply placed stresses from the body.
Benefits can be achieved from as little as five minutes of meditation and increased to 20–30 minutes. Meditation requires no religious belief or philosophical orientation—just a desire to increase your level of wellness.
Studies have shown that during meditation the body shows signs of deep relaxation, such as slower breathing and reduced oxygen consumption. While the body is relaxed, the mind remains alert. While not highly active, the mind is alert and quiet at the same time.
The act of meditation takes practice. Keeping your mind open and focused on one element can be very challenging. As you continue to practice, you will find that it becomes easier and easier to keep your concentration.
