Energy Work

The concept of energy is nothing new. Many ancient cultures have practiced some form of energy work, including the Chinese, Japanese Egyptians and Indians. There are many types of energy work including acupressure, shiatsu, therapeutic touch, reiki, sound healing, crystals and others.

In quantum physics, there is no matter - everything is either energy or vibration. In fact, 99.9999% of what is considered matter is just empty space filled with energy. Albert Einstein demonstrated the relationship between matter and energy in his theory of relativity. Matter can be converted into energy, as we see with nuclear energy.

It is all around us, and part of us. The energy that each electron in an atom emits is like a wave - and we are filled with atoms. We have subtle swirling energies underlying all of our physical reality and forming the basis of all matter. We can not deny that humans, and everything around us, are made up of energy.

IN HUMANS. THE ENERGETIC SIGNATURE EXISTS IN THE FORM OF OUR SUBTLE ENERGETIC BODIES. INCLUDING.

  • Chakras - the energetic wheels at the center of the body

  • Meridians - the energetic pathways through which qi flows

  • Auras - the energy fields that surround the human body and enable us to detect our own energy and the energy of others

The basic idea behind energy work is that there is a subtle field of energy that runs through all living things. when this subtle energy Is flowing smoothly we have health. When it is blocked or not flowing smoothly we experience imbalances. Energy practitioners believe that "dis-ease" begins in this more subtle field before it manifests in the physical body. By focusing on the flow of subtle energy. we can restore the body to balance. There are many ways to balance the flow of subtle energy in the body. Among these are exercise, the healthy expression of emotions and hands-on work.

Our current understanding of energy as a constant force in the universe that is ever changing comes from the late 19th century, however the belief in energy and energy work runs the span of recorded history. While these ancient peoples may not have been able to express how energy affects the body on a molecular level, they were still using energetic healing modalities to prevent and cure disease.

  • Ancient India - practitioners of Ayurveda describe life force as prana. All weaknesses and illnesses result from a lack of prana flowing through the body, and restoring the flow of prana is essential for health.

  • Ancient China - Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners work with qi, a life force energy similar to prana. When the two opposite forces of qi, yin and yang, are out of balance, illness can result.

  • Ancient Egypt - healers use stones and other energy techniques to diagnose and treat illness

  • Ancient Greece - worked to balance the five humors through energy work and medicine

BASIC IDEAS OF ENERGY WORK:

  • Energy work is usually performed in silence. Silence allows for greater concentration on the subtle flow or energy.

  • Energy work is much more about "being" than "doing". Quality time is shared between practitioner and guest - listening and simply being there for them - can allow for the greatest healing

  • Healing hands are important. Energy work is more about what the practitioner is feeling what the guest’s energy is occurring as opposed to doing a something.

  • The practitioner will not use their own energy. They typically imagine the energy flowing from an outside source (such as the universe) through them to the guest. Some even work with spirit guides.

  • Breathing is an essential aspect of energy work to deepen your relaxation and becoming open to your experience.

  • Energy work is subtle work.

A channel of energy flows throughout the body, touching every cell and every organ. The energy that is released and carried throughout this pathway makes up the electromagnetic energy field of the body.

What does Reiki feel like during the session?

Perceptions vary from person to person. However, deep relaxation is most widely reported. Often other feelings include warmth, cold, feeling very light or heavy and tingling. People often see colors with their eyes closed. Some have vivid dreams or memories that arise. It is also common to have certain emotions that surface up that have been suppressed. Whether a person feels a lot or a little does not indicate the amount of help Reiki is giving. Awareness varies from person to person and in each session. Reiki works on all levels, some of which are very deep and outside of our awareness. Some people relax into sleep which is perfectly fine and does not effect the treatment in any way.

What will I feel like after the session?

Relaxation is most commonly reported—both in the session and after. Other common outcomes are feeling lighter, unburdened, less pain, well-rested, more balanced, and easy going. Positive effects take place on all levels—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual and last for days, weeks and for some even longer.

Rarely, we may feel a bit down, moody or have physical symptoms such as a headache or tiredness indicating a healing reaction. Generally, this cycle of processing and release resolves within a couple of days as we shift into a state much better than before the Reiki treatment. If you experience any discomfort, please remember this is actually a positive sign that much healing is taking place. Always contact your practitioner if you are concerned.

Is Reiki Safe?

Reiki is absolutely safe because it is a practice based solely on life force energy which is naturally inherent in all living things. It cannot do harm and is safe for babies, children, expectant mothers, people of any age or state of health, plants and animals. Reiki practitioners do not prescribe substances nor interfere in any medical treatments. Reiki is a complement to traditional care and never a replacement which is why it's referred to as a complementary therapy and not an alternative therapy.

Do not eat 2 hours before the session & avoid caffeine, alcohol, or substances.

We advise to not consume any meals within 2 hours of the session. You may have a light snack or water, but do your best to curb consumption so you can have a comfortable session.

Be open & set your intention(s.

There is no “one size fits all” mold for energy healing. Your body is going to release exactly what it needs, in the moment, and the most important thing you can do is to honor what your body needs. Stay in your space and focus on your own experience without thinking it should be a certain way. The times where we surrender and allow ourselves to be open are when we receive the most beautiful messages.

What should I do after a reiki session?

  1. Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water, reframe from alcohol and caffeine.

  2. Rest. If possible, schedule your Reiki appointment at a time where you’ll have the rest of the day off to relax or sleep. It’s important to not push yourself too hard after Reiki, because your body will probably want to rest. In addition, I highly recommend disconnecting from technology for the rest of the day, as this will help your nervous system to decompress and relax. Yes, this means switching off your phone!

  3. Let your emotions flow. When you freely allow yourself to feel (without repressing the emotions and without judging any emotions as good or bad), then you allow healing at a very deep level. Most of us have been taught by society to stifle our emotions, which causes massive damage in the long-run.

  4. Be patient and observant. Sometimes the results from Reiki are not immediately apparent. It may take a few weeks or even a few months before you can really perceive all that has shifted. It’s important not to get lost in impatience, doubt, or self-criticism. Healing happens on its own schedule.

  5. Embrace detox symptoms. When you receive Reiki healing, your body shifts into a higher frequency. When this happens, a is often triggered; this is also known as the “healing crisis.” When you are detoxing, you may experience a runny nose, sneezing, soreness, headaches, joint or muscular pain, fatigue, acne, rashes, extra mucus, or even fever and diarrhea. This is simply your body cleansing itself of old patterns and toxins, which are then coming to the surface to be released. Get plenty of rest. Drink lots of water and fresh, raw vegetable juice and eat a colorful diet.

  6. Embrace the changes. After your first Reiki session, you may have needs and wants that differ from your normal routine. The important thing is to listen to yourself and give yourself permission to find out what feels good for you

When should I make a follow-up appointment?

Your Reiki practitioner may make recommendations as a result of your session. Common suggestions range from a week, two weeks, or longer. Ideally, regular sessions are part of your regimen to help support maintaining balance and wellbeing. Please remember that it takes time for imbalances to occur and manifest, so it is understandable that multiple sessions may be the most beneficial in reversing these imbalances.
