The cleansing of the ears is not only important for maintaining good physical conditions for the sense of healing. In the orient and especially notable in China, there is an entire tradition of auricular therapy where conditions for the entire body can be treated through the massage, acupuncture, and a number of other methods relating directing to the ear. In Sanskrit, Karna means ear & Purana means to fill up.
The practice of using oil in the ears is the basis of Karna Purana. This is an Ayurvedic treatment that is often done with Pacha Karma, but can also be done in conjunction with other treatments, or on its own.
The most basic aspect of it is filling the canal of the right, then left ear with warm sesame or medicated oils for a period of 10 to 20 minutes. The treatment can also involve mama point therapy, reflexology with tools or tuning forks, ear massage, lymphatic drainage, and/or warm herbal poultice massage.
The treatment gets its name from the significant marma point known as karna that is just behind and slightly below the earlobes. Stimulating this marma helps with various ear conditions, tinnitus, jaw and neck tension, even anxiety.
Karna Purana uses the energetics of the marma by stimulating it directly and through the presence of the oil.
The incredible benefits are:
Relieves itching and dryness in the ears.
Helps dissolve wax build-up.
Reduces Vata dosha excess to clear the sense of hearing.
Is useful in relieving ringing in the ears.
Helps with TMJD
Generally loosens jaw and neck tension.
*Karna Purana is less invasive than Nedra Basti. If you experience itching, tickling or discomfort in the ear after the therapy, please note that this can be a normal response and will stop after some time. *
